What is Rakuten?
Rakuten is a cash-back shopping portal. It has an independent app as well as a Chrome browser extension. Rather than shopping through a store’s app, you would link to the store through Rakuten and make your purchase, receiving a small refund on your purchase, after it is confirmed.

Why AMEX points?
Amex points are often much more valuable than the cash back offered through Rakuten. Because the Rakuten points come in at one cent, any value over that one cent, is already worth it. Especially when it comes to international flights or luxury hotels, there are many chances to earn well beyond one cent per point with AMEX.
How do I link my Rakuten to Amex?
First, and most important, you need an AMEX card that earns Membership Rewards Points. I would recommend the AMEX Green or Gold to start, both of which you can find at the link HERE.
Secondly, you need to open you Rakuten account, and you may need to do this on a computer to get it to work.
Once in your account you will go into your wallet and add the AMEX card that earns Membership Rewards points.
Once this card is added, and you go to the account settings you should be able to toggle from earning cash back to earning Membership Rewards points.
When will I get my rewards?
Just like when you receive cash back through Rakuten, your membership rewards points will also post quarterly.
Conclusion
This is a great way to earn extra points from the shopping and spending you are already doing. It can be confusing to set up at first, but once it is set up, just sit back and let the points roll in.
