What is Fat Bear Week?
On Fat Bear Week every year, the general public participates in online brackets to vote for the fattest of the fattest grizzly bears in Alaska. It sends us into yearly fits of giggles, and our family really hones in on our competitive nature with the brackets. Honestly, it’s something that brings great joy to our lives and I couldn’t help but share. Someday, I would love to travel hack my way to Katmai!
How it Works
At the beginning of the week, which is today (October 2,2023), they will post all the bears and their bios on the website. You have a couple days to download your brackets and decide on the bear you are rooting for. Then on October 4th comes the voting….Each day you login to vote for your favorite bear as they advance through the brackets. And finally…….at the end of the week……they crown a CHAMPION! We hope you enjoy this as much as we do.
Homeschooling
Because we are a homeschooling family, here are a few ways you could use this in educating your kids….
- Find average weights of grizzly bears and estimate the weight of these bears
- Plan a Trip to Katmai and create a travel budget, flights, hotels, time of year, etc.
- Write a paper on Grizzly Bears – research their habits and feeding patterns
- For the littles, color or draw a picture of a bear and color their habitat
- Create a meal based on a grizzly bear diet
- Dioramas of their habitat – I’m no fun and dioramas make me bonkers, but if you’re a fun mom, maybe this is for you!!
