How Do We Know these Work?
Because we tried them! I spent several rainy days in theme parks growing up, and since being married we have ended up in rainy camping trips, rainy New York and London adventures, and rainy theme park days. These are the tried and true tips that have really helped us!
So, the Forecast Calls for Rain…What do I pack?

Waterproof Socks
These socks are a magical gift from the Lord. If you’re on the fence, just buy them and thank me later. We walked in the rain ALL DAY and my feet were as dry as a summer day. I couldn’t believe it, and I will forever tell everyone I know about them.
Kids Rain Boots
Our kids LOVE wearing their rain boots whenever they get a chance, and this is the perfect chance. Although clunky in the luggage, and not the most comfortable, dry feet was what we needed, and these bad boys delivered.
Ponchos
These were another lifesaver for us! I was repeatedly thankful that we had purchased them ahead of time and did not have to pay $20 per poncho in the theme park gift shop.
Rain Jacket
When I first bought our Columbia Packable Rain Jackets, I wasn’t really sure how much we would use them. WOW! We have gotten so much use out of them and we absolutely love them. And, as an added bonus, they take up almost no room in a suitcase. Win, win, win.
Waterproof Pants
We ended up with multiple types of waterproof pants which I’ve linked HERE, HERE, and HERE for you. Honestly, it didn’t matter which type, we were just all thankful for some moisture-wicking ability.
Lots of Plastic Bags
I threw a bunch of grocery bags in my suitcase at the last minute, and I was so very glad I made that choice. It helped to contain all the wet so the whole suitcase wasn’t a pool.
Tips on Surviving the Rain
- Give yourself breaks. In all of the places we have traveled in rain we have consistently looked for “dry breaks” where we could refresh and dry off and feel less wet. It’s amazing what an hour in a cafe for lunch will do for your morale and will to continue in the rain.
- Eat and Hydrate. It’s so easy to forget this in the rain because you don’t want to pull out snacks when it’s wet and who is thinking of drinking water when they are dripping with it?! But it’s so important, and like the last tip, a complete morale booster.
- HAVE FUN!! There are so many less people in theme parks and big cities when it rains. We have had Legoland, Times Square, and Hyde Park virtually empty. That is an experience you may never have again, so ENJOY!
