Many people I have talked to have listed VRBO as their top place to find vacation rentals, so I was eager to research ways to earn points and miles through VRBO. Unfortunately, there is not much good news here as far as paying with points and miles.
Paying with Points
The standard answer for something not covered on points is typically to use a card like a Capital One Venture card to pay yourself back for travel. Unfortunately, VRBO does not consistently code as travel through Capital One which makes this a non-option. Your best option for paying for VRBO with points and miles is to utilize a cash back card like AMEX Blue Cash Preferred to pay yourself back.
Rewards
VRBO is introducing a rewards program on July 6th, 2023. It will be interesting to see where they take this and if it will have an effect on points and miles or make them a more exciting contender for travel hacking vacation rentals.
Earning Points
Thankfully, there are a few ways to earn points and miles on a VRBO purchase. This makes your purchase more worthwhile.
- United Airlines Portal – In the United Airlines portal, you can earn 3 points per dollar spend on a VRBO purchase.
- Alaskan Airlines Portal – Earn 1 miles per dollar spent at VRBO.
- Pay with your Capital One Venture Card – Earn 2x points for every purchase.
Conclusion
Overall, we expected more options to pay for VRBO with points and miles. They are a large company, but there aren’t a lot of travel hacking opportunities through their website. The good news is there are lots of other ways to utilize other Vacation Rentals for Points and Miles.
